Theatre conventions were a lot stricter during the Elizabethan Era, when seating was assigned based on class and patrons who failed to turn off their cell phones were openly mocked in the minstrel's lyrics during musical interludes. Take in a more merciful evening of performance with today's WagJag, and pay $69 for a ticket to see War Horse at the Princess of Wales Theatre (up to a $137.50 value). An award-winning National Theatre of Great Britain production, War Horse is an epic about a young boy and his beloved horse caught in the violent crossfire of World War I. Young Albert Narracott's trusty steed, Joey, is sold to the cavalry and shipped off to France, encountering grim circumstances on both the British and German front lines. Though not even old enough to enlist in the Army, Albert's refusal to leave his four-legged friend behind leads him on a truly hazardous journey to bring Joey back home. The Toronto production stars recent National Theatre School of Canada graduate Alex Furber as Albert.
One of the show's major draws is the breathtaking life-sized puppets, created in gorgeous detail by the Handspring Puppet Company and brought to life by a talented cast of movement artists. Now a worldwide hit, War Horse has received an impressive five Tony Awards including Best Play, while the Toronto staging has earned praise from critics across the board.
